Thermal sterilisation methods are used in a range of decontamination applications. Waste Discard can be rendered safely sterile by the same saturated steam sterilisation techniques as standard porous loads.

Decontamination of Pathogenic loads (Categories 1-3) can also be performed with saturated steam sterilisation techniques. The process and equipment require additional safety precautions for operator and maintenance staff. The required measures ensure that all effluents discharged from the chamber at any stage of the cycle are sterile.

Where Effluent requires decontamination, this is typically achieved by the use of two buffer tanks. Each collects then superheats its contents to controlled temperatures and pressures so sterilising it. Working in tandem, one tank is collecting while the other is sterilising.

Where loads cannot be thermally sterilised, surface decontamination using Chlorine dioxide, Vaporised Hydrogen Peroxide or Peracetic acid are further options.
